Kelly & Callum's DIY Dream Wedding

With almost no experience in crafts, let alone carpentry, Kelly always knew that she would want to do as much DIY as she could for her wedding. To many’s surprise, thanks to the help, support and patience of her husband to be, Callum, they ended up building all their reception tables, their arbour, their flower arrangements and so much more.

For most people weddings are more a celebration of family than simply the couple exchanging vows at the altar, and for Kelly and Callum it was exactly that. They wanted their day to be more inclusive of those people that play such a large role in their lives and Gilgara Retreat provided the couple with the perfect venue to suit all of their desires. Weeks of location scouting in the Margaret River wine region of Western Australia resulted in a venue that was able to accommodate 35 of their closest family and friends, allowing everyone to enjoy the weekend of celebrations together.

“Gilgara Retreat provided us with the perfect venue for our special day, Angus, the owner there, is the sweetest and most easy going person to work with and was perfect for what I needed.”

The marquee was kindly set up by South West Event Hire and the festoon lighting by South West Event Service on the Thursday morning.

“We spent all of Thursday and Friday setting up for the ceremony and reception, we are extremely happy with our vendor choices, they were very easy to work with” Kelly said, “My grandmother and I did most of the flower arrangements for the flower boxes and arbor detail, I really wanted masses of foliage more than flowers so we hardly spent any money in this department – I just walked around the grounds of Gilgara and surrounds and pruned some gum and other tree varieties”. The King Proteas were purchased from Cape Flora Estate near Yallingup and added a touch of vibrancy to the foliage.

“Caitlin Gilbert from Beautique Love did our nails and spray tans on the Thursday and then joined us at 11am on Saturday to start the preparations. I am so happy with the service that Caitlin provided, I did a make-up trial with her a few weeks before and was surprised at how she was able to make my deep set eye look wide open and bright, the make-up on the day was even better! Caitlin was so easy going and great with Cal’s nephew when he joined me and wanted to get involved.”

Elke Butler, who now leads the Bridal styling arm of The Nest Hair Boutique in Perth provided Kelly and her bridal party with the beautiful, relaxed hair styles for the day. “One of my favourite memories of getting ready was when Elke finished my pony tale which came out longer than in the trial. She saw my concern in my face and so grabbed some kitchen scissors to make it the perfect length for me”.

Kelly designed her wedding dress and had the amazingly talented Katie Colgan from Loui Col Designs bring it to life. “Working with Katie was a dream! I was very nervous about getting my dress made, but I always knew I would. Nothing I found in the shops made me feel special… and I guess I just wanted my own dress that no one would have ever seen before or tried on”. “Katie was fun and the best part was that she never said ‘no’. I had so many ideas and being the crazy perfectionist that I am, I nit-picked every detail… Katie always responded with a ‘we can try that’ or a ‘oh, yeah I see that there, let’s try this idea to make it work’… I truly loved the experience and I wish it wasn’t over”. “I wanted something that walked the line between modern and romantic, the tulle skirt was a bit of fun and the dress underneath was my sultry surprise”.

Cindy, Kelly’s bridesmaid and sister, wore a Shona Joy dress purchased at Coco and Lola Bridesmaids.

Kelly’s rings are a Vera Wang creation and earings were from Katie’s studio. “I wore my mother’s Tanznite ring as my something blue and borrowed, it is just such a stunning and unique piece”. Although Kelly and her family put most of the foliage arrangements together, she opted to have the bouquets, buttonholes and corsages made by Samara at Bloom Tribe.

Callum and his groomsman, wore suits from YD. “We looked everywhere for the perfect fitting suit for Cal, we struggled to find one that was long enough but still fitted to his shape, YD had the perfect suit for him”.

The ceremony was simple and sweet with the couple deciding not to recite vows. Their celebrant, Carla Paterson had asked them to email her a note about what Cal meant to Kel and vice versa. “It was basically like writing our vows and Carla recited them to us. I have been to a few weddings where the bride and groom read their vows from a sheet of paper – which I always imagined I would do too – but being able to watch Cal as Carla read his vows to me was the best part of the ceremony for me. He denies it, but there were tears!”.
Kelly walked down the aisle to Heatbeats by Jose Gonzalez
“Cal and my relationship is so much built on our sense of humour, we laugh a lot! Our ceremony was no different and that was exactly how we wanted it! I had the giggles for the first half and Carla managed it so well. We told her that we wanted the ceremony to be relaxed and to go with the flow of whatever happened.”

The photographer on the day was Louise Coghill Photography.
“We just adored her style. She listened to every suggestion I had prior to the day and was able to provide exactly what I hoped for – and more! I can’t speak highly enough of Louise”. “We had a few kids at the wedding and Louise was great with them too, she gave them little jobs to do so they felt like they were helping out and all the while distracting them from running into the photos”.

Cal and Kel chose to forgo most of the traditional formalities for the reception with the intention of getting to the dance floor as soon as possible. “Our dads and the best man gave beautiful speeches sharing stories of our childhood, they both had the whole reception in stitches!”.
Margaret River Events Co provided the catering and bar service. “We wanted simple, home style food on massive share plates so that people would need to interact with each other. MRECO provided the most delicious food and Lainy provided the best customer service – they offered so much assistance in every area of catering and drinks service even offering to plate up sliders before their service was over at the end of the night for those who were still hungry!”
DJ Avi from Top Shelf Music provided all of the music from pre-ceremony drinks until the end of the party at 1am. “We were so impressed with DJ Avi. Music is such a big thing for us and our family, we knew that this was the one detail that could really derail our big day if not done well. We provided Avi with so many examples and a song list but also asked him to read the crowd and to use his experience to find the right music for the atmosphere. DJ Avi exceeded our expectations and we literally had everyone on the dance floor from the end of the first dance at 9:30pm to 1am!”
Cal & Kel chose a Eukalele rendition of Le Vie en Rose by Edith Piaf for their first dance in honour of their French friends that traveled over for their wedding. “Dj Avi surprised us with the bubbles, it was such a sweet and fun addition to our special moment.”
Cindy’s sister and Maid of Honour, Cindy, made her wedding cakes that were served on platters to dancers throughout the night.
